Kuomboka Ceremony

During the rainy season when the Zambezi River floods the plains of Western Province, members of the Lozi people must move to higher ground., including the Litunga, their king. The Kuomboka Festival celebrates the chief's relocation in a traditional royal barge, the Nalikwanda. These photos were taken in 1972.
